- Summary A deadly earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale has devastated large areas of southeast Afghanistan. Based on initial reports, more than 1,000 people have been killed. However, the number of casualties is expected to increase as rescuers reach the hardest-hit villages where people remain trapped in rubble. The earthquake – the deadliest in the country for two decades – hit about 40km from the city of Khost, a provincial capital in the country’s southeast. The worst damage was in the neighbouring Paktika Province, which lies along the border with Pakistan. The earthquake struck in the middle of the night while people were sleeping, destroying mud-brick houses common in the area. Afghanistan is prone to earthquakes, as it is located in a seismically active region over a number of fault lines. In the past 10 years, more than 7,000 people have been killed in earthquakes in the country, the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reports. There are an average 560 deaths a year from earthquakes. Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS) teams are providing support to communities hit hard by the earthquake. ARCS mobilised staff from its local branches for immediate response, supporting search and rescue efforts and providing first aid to the injured. ARCS trucks carrying relief items and medicines as well as ambulances were dispatched immediately to the affected areas. They compliment mobile health teams already operational in Paktika, which have been redirected to address immediate needs resulting from the earthquake. Key figures An estimated 200,000 people have been affected by the earthquake. Afghan Red Crescent has a network of over 30,000 volunteers and 2,400 staff, with a presence in all provinces of Afghanistan. ARCS is sending 4,000 blankets, 800 tents and tarpaulins, 1,500 water storage containers and hundreds of mattresses, pillows, blankets and cooking utensils to the earthquake zone. ARCS is also fast-tracking procurement and distribution of food.
