SummaryIt has been 20 years since the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which claimed hundreds of thousands of lives and caused widespread destruction across multiple countries. Since then, awareness and preparedness for tsunamis have significantly improved in the region. The Maldives was one of the countries deeply affected by this tragedy.
In the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and several Partner National Societies began providing relief and recovery support in the Maldives. Their extensive efforts not only contributed to the recovery but also marked the introduction of the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement to the Maldivian community. On April 28, 2009, the Maldivian Parliament passed the Maldivian Red Crescent Act, formalizing the establishment of the Maldivian Red Crescent (MRC).
Since its formation, MRC has been a leader in humanitarian work across the Maldives. Over the past 15 years, the organization has successfully carried out a wide range of programs, interventions, and campaigns in areas such as Emergency Response, Disaster Preparedness, Epidemic Preparedness and Response, First Aid, Mental Health and Psychosocial Support, Patient Transport Services, Social Care and Inclusion, Promoting Healthy Living, and Youth Empowerment.
