Tania Mayes (honduras) is a psychologist working with the Canadian ERU in La Lima, Honduras to give psychological support to people that have been affected by hurranes Eta and Iota. La Lima is one of the villages that suffered great damages in the country. Date: 02-12-2020
Hurricane Eta made landfall in Nicaragua on Tuesday, November 3rd as an
extremely dangerous category 4 hurricane. Eta’s heavy rains caused flooding,
landslides, damage to infrastructure, homes and crops in all Central American
countries, with extensive damage to Nicaragua, Honduras and Guatemala. On
November 8th, it arrived in Cuba with sustained winds of 100km and rains that also
affected The Bahamas and Jamaica. Tropical Storm Eta made landfall in Florida and
heavy rains caused black outs and damages to infrastructure including Covid-19
testing sites.
Ten days later, Iota made landfall in Nicaragua and the Gracias a Dios region as a
dangerous category 5 hurricane. Flooding and mudslides in Honduras, Nicaragua
and Guatemala were exacerbated by Hurricane Eta’s recent effects in those
countries. Iota was the 30th named storm of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season,
breaking the 2005 record, when there were 28 named storms.
