SummaryChad/Sudan border August 2023 Over 4.6 million people have been displaced since conflict broke out in Sudan. This includes over 426,000 people who have fled across the border into neighbouring Chad, searching for safety. The Red Cross of Chad is working alongside other Red Cross Red Crescent Movement partners to respond to the growing needs of refugees and host communities. In the Ouaddaï Region, Red Cross teams are working in refugee camps: distributing hot meals for new arrivals, daily trucking of clean water, carrying out hygiene promotion activities, distributing essential goods, and constructing latrines and shelters in partnership with other humanitarian agencies. Volunteers are also on the ground helping those displaced by conflict locate family members through the Restoring Family Links programme. As the number of people seeking refuge in Chad climbs each day, more resources and programming is needed to respond to the ever-growing needs. The available water is insufficient for the increasing population. Refuge camps are rapidly filling, and space is running out. There is a lack of protection services available for a population that is majority women and children. The onset of the rainy season is bringing more challenges, including disruptions in transport of goods and the risk that water borne illnesses will spread quickly through the crowded camps.
